Watermark Software

Most of us now own digital cameras. If you love to upload images to the net, there is always the risk of the pictures being copied and used without your prior approval. It is now possible to use digital watermark software as a way of protecting image files from unauthorized usage. The program is easy to set up and can help to ensure you remain in control of your favorite photographs.

Most digital watermarks consist of an embedded and visible overlay, comprising of a logo, text, or copyright notice. Though the mark in itself does not prevent unauthorized use, it does make it a lot more difficult for an image to be used in a way that has not been approved.

Today there is also the option of using a mark that is not visible during normal use. A small piece of code can be attached to the file which allows it to be identified correctly, and also tracked. The same system is often used to protect software from piracy.

You may think that a visible mark can be edited out of an image. Of course, this is true, but to do so is not that straightforward, and the results always have tell tale signs of editing. To minimize the risk of the image being misused, place the mark in an important part of the image.

There is no correct format to use for your copyright, most people choose to incorporate the copyright symbol, the photographer's name, plus the website URL on which it is hosted. The watermark should not scare people away from viewing and using the image, it should point viewers in the direction of the owner, so that if they want, they can legally obtain a copy.

Before investing in watermark software, it can be worthwhile using a trial version so as to develop an understanding as to whether the tools and options are to your liking.
